Dylan O’Dwyer, owner of Alta Plumbing and Heating Inc., began his journey into the world of plumbing right after high school. He didn’t want to be confined to a classroom anymore so he started working for a plumbing contractor in Kingston, Ontario. Dylan was given the job through a friend, who was working for a large home builder in Kingston because the plumber working on that job owed him a favour. Dylan arrived for work that first day and stayed working there for a year and a half. It was love at first pipe. What Dylan loves about the plumbing and gas fitting industry is the huge variety of work that makes every day different and interesting. When Dylan started to get serious about his career, he made the decision to become certified. He was working in Ontario and reading in the news about all the trades shortage in British Columbia. The company he was working at wasn’t able to take on an apprentice, so he had the option to either quit and start work with a new company or move out west. He chose to move out west! He had a place to live in Whistler, with family friends, so he moved out and within a week he had a job, and officially started his apprenticeship. He was eager to go to school start learning more about his trade and finished his trade school at BCIT in Burnaby. Dylan became a red seal certified plumber, certified backflow assembly tester and class B gas fitter. After he finished school in 2008 he started getting into hydronic heating. Learning from his coworkers and various courses offered through TECA (Thermal Environment Comfort Association). Dylan moved to Whistler for the snowboarding, and once he got a taste for the fresh powder, he fell in love with this amazing place. When he’s not working, he can be seen camping, golfing and boating, biking or snowboarding.
